The words Modern and Contemporary mean basically the same thing. Contemporary design and modern design are two distinct stylistic movements.

Is modern the same as contemporary?. Modern art is that which was created sometime between the 1860s some say the 1880s and the late 1960s some say only through the 1950s. While modern art runs up until around the 1960s or 70s contemporary art is used to refer to that created from this time up until the present day. Modern design on the other hand has a distinguishable aesthetic that emphasizes crisp lines warm neutrals and balance. Although these two words are interchangeable in some contexts they might have specific meanings in different fields. So we started calling this new dance form Modern then something came along that was more modern than modern and we called it Post-Modern.

Although many people think that Modern and Contemporary dance are the same thing they are actually two different styles. They are two separate things. Contemporary means something or someone belonging to or occurring in the present.

Modern is a period of art that we passed through in the 20th Century it is still favourable amongst some but they would be being retrograde artists in their usage of the form. Contemporary dance essentially borrows from well-known genres such as ballet modern jazz and international forms of dance. In everyday use it generally means simply modern or new.

Modern in its turn is about the relation to the present as opposed to the past. The key difference between modern and contemporary literature is their time period. But for home designers and interior decorating professionals the terms modern and contemporary refer to two distinct design styles.

Contemporary means the art of the current day. Anything that is created now or has been produced recently is referred to as contemporary art and there are many different styles of creation under this heading. Instead both designs are pared down to include only the most basic and essential elements.

For most people the design terms modern and contemporary sound like they mean the same thingand a dictionary definition supports this interpretation because the words are considered synonyms. Contemporary is by definition whats happening in design at this very moment in time. Here we have the first slight difference in connotation between contemporary and modern art.

So in this sense contemporary is not limited to a single stylistic thread. A room with a modern or contemporary style is not designed to overwhelm the senses.
